The handoff is the failure

Why asset performance management and maintenance management belong in one system.

Walk into any plant that takes reliability seriously and you'll find two good systems doing half a job each.

The CMMS runs the discipline of maintenance: work orders, PM schedules, parts, labor, history. It is excellent at execution and blind to condition — it learns about equipment state the way a filing cabinet does, when a human types it in. So preventive maintenance runs by the calendar: too early for healthy machines, too late for failing ones.

The APM — asset performance management — sees. Baselines, anomaly detection, health scores. It knows the bearing is degrading. But its output is an alert: an email, a dashboard flag, a CSV export. Detection that nobody turns into work is just better-informed downtime.

Tuesday to Friday

Here is the path a detection typically takes. The APM flags the anomaly on Tuesday. The alert lands in an inbox. Someone reads it Wednesday, decides it's real, and re-types it into the CMMS on Thursday. The work order appears Friday. The bearing failed Wednesday night.

Every arrow between two systems is latency. Every re-type loses the evidence — the trend, the operating state, the confidence — so the technician arrives with a one-line description of a problem the APM understood in detail. And the integration project meant to close this gap is where reliability budgets go to die, because it has to be rebuilt every time either vendor ships a new version.

One system, because it was never two jobs
